Custom Design

We help turn a brief, sketch or rough idea into a workable wooden product that fits the space, the budget and the purpose. From one-off gifts to shop signage and event pieces, our Somerset West team handles design, cutting, engraving and finishing for clients across the Western Cape and beyond.

Turning a brief into a workable wooden piece

Custom design starts with what you need the item to do. A wedding welcome sign must read clearly from a few metres away, a shop sign needs to survive daily handling, and a gift plaque should feel personal without becoming cluttered. We look at size, font choice, wood type, fixing method and where the piece will live, whether that is a home in Strand, a wine farm near Stellenbosch or a retail space in Cape Town.

Our design team works with your wording, logo files, sketches or reference photos and shapes them into a cuttable layout. If the idea needs practical changes, we say so early. That might mean widening thin lettering, adding a backing layer for strength, or splitting a large panel into sections so it can be packed and transported safely by courier.

What is included in a custom design order

Each custom design job is handled as a working production brief, not just a pretty drawing. You get guidance on layout, suitable materials and the best way to make the item last in South African conditions, especially where coastal humidity, direct sun or frequent handling can affect wood over time.

  • Concept review and size guidance based on your brief
  • Artwork preparation for laser cutting or engraving
  • Material advice for indoor and sheltered outdoor use
  • Fitment advice for wall mounting, hanging or freestanding display
  • Prototype samples when the design needs testing before full production
  • Assembly, sanding and finishing where required

We also help with grouped items such as event signage sets, table names, retail display pieces and bulk gift orders. If you need matching items across several branches or delivery points, we can keep the sizes and wording consistent.

How the design process works from first enquiry to approval

To get a Hermanus order moving, use the enquiry form on our contact page. Once we receive the brief, we check the wording, dimensions, quantity and intended use. If something is unclear, we come back with questions so the design does not drift off course later. A clear brief saves time and cost, especially when you need multiple pieces for a wedding, launch or corporate event.

  • Step 1: Send your idea, reference image or logo
  • Step 2: We confirm size, material and finish options
  • Step 3: Artwork is prepared for cutting or engraving
  • Step 4: You review the proposed layout where needed
  • Step 5: Production, finishing and packing follow after approval

For many standard jobs we can move straight into production once the brief is confirmed. For more complex builds, we recommend a prototype sample so you can check scale and readability before the full run starts. That is useful for layered signs, intricate script lettering and pieces with multiple fixing points.

Turnaround times for Somerset West and nationwide orders

Turnaround depends on the complexity of the design, the amount of finishing required and current production queue. Simple custom names or small engraved gifts can move quickly, while layered signs, sets of multiple items or jobs that need mock-ups take longer. We will always give a realistic timeframe upfront rather than promise something we cannot meet.

Local orders around Somerset West, Gordon's Bay, Strand, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Durbanville can often be scheduled for faster collection or local delivery depending on the item. Nationwide orders are packed carefully for courier travel, with extra protection around corners, layered sections and engraved surfaces. During load-shedding, production may be adjusted around machine and finishing schedules, so allowing a little extra time is wise for urgent work.

As a guide, smaller pieces may be ready in a few working days once approved, while larger or more detailed custom design jobs often need a longer lead time. If you are working to a fixed event date, tell us early so we can plan the sequence properly, not leave it to the last minute.

Pricing that matches the brief, materials and quantity

Pricing for custom design is based on the actual work involved. We look at design time, material use, cutting and engraving detail, assembly, finishing, packaging and quantity. A simple personalised plaque will not be priced the same as a layered shop sign with multiple colour-stained sections and mounting hardware.

Where possible, we provide options so you can choose what suits the budget. For example, a smaller size may work for a gift, while a thicker construction may be better for a sign that will be handled often. Bulk orders are priced differently from one-off pieces, and repeat elements can reduce the cost per item. We keep the approach practical and clear, so there are no surprises once production begins.

If your project has a tight budget, we can suggest adjustments such as simpler shapes, fewer layers or a more efficient size. In some cases a small change in layout saves both material and time without affecting the final look too much.

Finishing, care and maintenance for lasting wood products

Wood products need the right care depending on where they are used. Indoor decorative pieces usually need only light dusting with a dry cloth, while items near kitchens, bathrooms or coastal air may need more regular attention. In places like Hermanus or the wider Cape coast, moisture in the air can affect untreated wood over time, so finish choice matters.

  • Dust indoor pieces every 2 to 4 weeks
  • Check wall fixings and hanging points every 6 months
  • Re-oil or refresh sealed surfaces every 12 to 18 months if exposed to regular handling
  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight where possible to reduce fading
  • Wipe spills promptly and keep water off unfinished edges

For commercial signage and branded decor, we can advise on care intervals based on traffic and placement. If a piece starts to loosen, fade or pick up wear, it is better to address it early rather than wait until the damage becomes costly.

Questions we get asked

Can you work from a rough sketch or photo?

Yes. A rough sketch, phone photo or sample image is often enough for us to prepare a practical design and advise what will work best in wood.

Do you make one-off items as well as bulk orders?

We do both. One custom piece and a larger run for events, shops or corporate gifting can be handled through the same process.

Can you help if the item needs to suit coastal conditions or frequent handling?

Yes. We can suggest suitable material, thickness and finish so the item holds up better in humid areas and in spaces where it will be touched often.
