What wood engraving covers
Our wood engraving service is used for personalised gifts, business signage, wedding details and decorative pieces where the marking needs to sit neatly into the timber rather than on top of it. We can engrave names, monograms, logos, dates, quotes, venue details, line artwork and simple patterns on a range of wooden items supplied by us or by the client. The finish suits maple, birch ply, pine, oak, maranti and other stable woods, with results that work well for indoor use and for covered outdoor settings.
Engraving is often chosen where a natural, tactile finish is wanted. The mark sits in the wood grain, so the piece still feels like timber and not a printed board. That makes it a good option for wedding gifts, shop displays, menu boards, corporate giveaways and commemorative items. We can also combine engraving with cutting, layering or assembly when a project needs more depth or detail, and yes, we will check the file before we start cutting anything costly.
- Names, dates and short messages
- Company logos and simple line art
- Pattern fills, borders and decorative motifs
- Wayfinding, table numbers and event labels
- Keepsake wording for gifts and memorial pieces
How the engraving process works
We start with the brief, whether it comes from a homeowner in Strand, a wedding planner in Stellenbosch or a shop owner in Cape Town. The team checks the wood type, size, intended use and the level of detail needed. Marli handles design advice, Shailen prepares the machine settings, and Ruan checks the finish before dispatch. If you already have artwork, we clean it up for engraving. If not, we can help shape the wording and layout so the final piece reads clearly.
Once the layout is approved, we test the engraving depth and spacing on a sample offcut where needed. This matters on softer timber, because grain and resin content can change how dark or deep the mark looks. On small items, a difference of 0,2 mm can affect readability, so we work carefully, especially for serial numbers, fine scripts and tiny logos.
- Step 1: Send us your artwork, size and wood engraving brief
- Step 2: Confirm size, wood type and finish
- Step 3: Approve the layout or sample
- Step 4: We engrave, clean and inspect the piece
- Step 5: Collection from Somerset West or courier dispatch
Typical specs and detail limits
Most engraving projects need a clean, flat surface and enough contrast between the design and the grain. We can work on boards, plaques, signage blanks, gift items and assembled pieces. For best clarity, text is usually kept at 6 mm high or larger, depending on the font and the wood. Fine lines can be engraved, but very delicate artwork must be checked against the material and size. If a piece has knots, heavy grain or curves, we will advise where the engraving will sit best so the result stays neat.
For corporate and event work, we often repeat the same design across a batch. That may be 10 gift boxes for a small team or 150 table markers for a function venue. We can keep consistent spacing across the run and pack each item for safe transport, which helps when the order is going from Somerset West to Paarl, Hermanus or further afield. During load shedding, we manage production around power interruptions so jobs stay on schedule and the machine is not rushed.
Turnaround and order planning
Turnaround depends on the size of the job, the amount of artwork preparation needed and whether the pieces are being supplied by you or made by us. Small personal orders are often completed within a few working days once the layout is approved. Larger event or business runs may need extra time for batch setup, engraving, finishing and packing. If you need delivery to Cape Town, Gordon's Bay, Durbanville or outside the Western Cape, please allow a little extra for courier timing.
We recommend planning ahead for weddings, year-end gifts and shop launches. Coastal humidity in places like Hermanus and Strand can affect storage and finishing, so we like to know whether the item will live indoors, under cover or in a more exposed area. That way we can suggest the right timber and coating, or tell you plainly if the piece needs extra care after delivery.
- Small personalised orders: often a few working days after approval
- Bulk and event orders: allow longer for batching and packing
- Courier delivery: timing depends on destination and order size
- Rush work: possible on some jobs, subject to production space
Pricing approach for engraved wood
Pricing is based on the size of the engraving, the complexity of the artwork, the type of wood, the number of items and whether design setup is needed. A short name on a plaque is priced differently from a detailed logo on 80 units, because machine time and prep time are not the same. If the brief includes custom artwork cleaning, proofs, multiple revisions or assembly after engraving, those items are included in the quote so you know what you are paying for.
We keep the quoting process practical. You send the enquiry form, we review the brief and then confirm the best route for the job. Some orders are best priced per item, others as a batch rate. If you are comparing options for a shop, wedding, or corporate handout, ask for a sample or test piece first. It can save money later, especially where fine detail or colour staining is involved and you want the grain to stay visible.
Care, cleaning and maintenance intervals
Engraved wood lasts well when it is kept dry and wiped clean with a soft cloth. For indoor items, a light dusting every week or two is usually enough. For decorative pieces in kitchens, reception areas or covered patios, check the finish monthly and look for drying, edge wear or surface dulling. If the piece has a food-safe or protective coating, it may need refreshing every 12 to 24 months depending on use. A laser engraved item is not something you scrub hard, because that can soften the detail over time.
Where the item is going into a humid coastal area or a business space with frequent handling, we can suggest a maintenance plan that suits the timber and finish. Signs near entrances, for example, may need inspection at each season change, while keepsake boxes and gifts may only need an occasional wipe-down. If you are unsure, send through a photo through the enquiry form and we will advise on care before problems start.
- Dust gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth
- Avoid soaking, steel wool and harsh cleaners
- Keep away from direct heat and long sun exposure
- Check protective coating every 12 to 24 months
- Keep engraved wooden pieces flat, clean and dry between uses
