A Paarl nursery commission with a simple brief
The client was a young family in Paarl preparing a nursery for their first baby. They wanted something personal, calm in colour and neat enough to sit above a cot without overpowering the room. The brief was for a layered name sign and a matching hanging mobile that would feel soft and personal, not busy or fussy.
They asked for the baby’s name in a rounded style, with gentle shapes and a finish that would suit pale walls and natural timber furniture. They also wanted the pieces to be light enough for safe indoor hanging and easy to move later if the room layout changed. We kept the look clean, with no sharp corners and no heavy depth that might make the sign feel bulky.
- Client type: private home
- Town: Paarl
- Project type: nursery name sign and matching mobile
- Use: newborn room decor
What had to be considered before cutting
For a nursery piece, the practical details matter just as much as the look. The sign needed to be light, stable and suitable for indoor use in a room that may have a heater running in winter and a window open on warmer days. We also had to think about the finish because Paarl homes can see dry heat in summer and dust from open windows, so the surface had to be smooth and easy to wipe clean.
The mobile had to be balanced so it would hang properly and not twist awkwardly. We planned the layout around the weight of each wooden element, the spacing between pieces and the size of the nursery wall. Since the sign would be installed in a family home, we kept the hanging points discreet and the back tidy. There was also a simple timing issue: the family wanted it ready before the baby shower, so we worked to a short but manageable schedule.
- Finish had to be smooth for a nursery setting
- Pieces had to stay light and well balanced
- Spacing had to work above the cot and changing area
- Timeline had to suit the shower date
Design, material choice and cutting details
We prepared the artwork in-house and checked the name styling before cutting. The main sign was made as a layered wooden piece with a solid back layer, raised lettering and a second detail layer to give depth without making the sign too heavy. The mobile was produced as a matching set of smaller hanging shapes to echo the same theme and keep the room feeling joined up.
The main sign measured 780 mm wide by 320 mm high, with a layered depth of about 9 mm in total. The mobile was set out across 620 mm, with each hanging element cut to stay light and neat. We used sealed timber panels suited to interior work, then did the edge cleanup by hand so the grain and cut lines stayed tidy. The paintwork was kept soft and neutral, with a matte finish to avoid glare from the room light.
- Main sign size: 780 mm x 320 mm
- Mobile span: 620 mm
- Approximate layered depth: 9 mm
- Finish: matte, indoor-safe and easy to dust
Making and finishing in Somerset West
The cut parts were produced at our Somerset West base and then assembled, checked and finished by hand. Shailen handled the machine cutting, while Ruan did the sanding, edge cleanup and final fitting. Marli checked the layout and proportions so the lettering sat cleanly against the back layer. Lesedi kept the client updated on progress and timing, and Leah prepared the packing so the pieces would travel safely to Paarl.
Because nursery items need a neat surface, we spent extra time on the smaller parts. Any tiny burn marks from cutting were cleaned off where needed, then the pieces were sealed and painted in a controlled sequence. The mobile required more patience than the sign, since each hanging piece had to line up properly and move well once installed. We tested the balance before dispatch, then gave the whole set a final inspection under natural light to catch any marks or uneven edges.
- Cutting, sanding and assembly completed in house
- Balance checked before dispatch
- Edges smoothed by hand for a cleaner finish
- Final inspection done before packing
Timeline from first enquiry to delivery
The full project took just under three weeks from enquiry to delivery. Week 1 covered the brief, sizing and layout approval. Week 2 was production, finishing and assembly. Week 3 was packing, courier handover and delivery to Paarl. The timing worked well because it gave us enough space to get the finish right while still meeting the family’s target date. No rush job was needed, which always helps with small decorative work like this.
We kept the process simple for the client, with one set of proofs and one adjustment to the hanging layout before final sign-off. That saved time and avoided back-and-forth. The family wanted a result that felt personal but not overly styled, so once the proportions were approved we kept the rest steady and consistent. It arrived ready to hang, with the mobile packed flat and the sign protected for travel. Delivery to Paarl was straightforward and on schedule.
- Week 1: brief and layout
- Week 2: cutting and finishing
- Week 3: packing and delivery
- Final handover: ready to hang on arrival
The finished room and what we would repeat
The result was a nursery set that looked calm, personal and properly made for the room. The layered sign gave the baby’s name clear presence on the wall, while the matching mobile added movement without clutter. The family could place it above the cot or near the changing corner, and the tones worked well with the rest of the room. It was the sort of project where the details are quiet, but they make the space feel finished.
If we were making the same type of project again, we would keep the same approach: light layers, a matte finish, and a careful check on hanging weight before packing. For a nursery, that matters more than trying to add too much. We would also ask a few more questions upfront about wall colour and lighting, because even a small change in the room can affect how the wood reads once it is installed. That extra bit of planning saves time and helps the piece sit naturally in the space.
- Best suited to calm, light nursery interiors
- Works well as a gift or for a room refresh
- Easy to repeat for other names and colour ways
- Useful for homes across the Western Cape by courier
