Simon's Town Event Signs

We supplied a set of wooden event signs for a community gathering in Simon’s Town, with clear wayfinding, a warm welcome piece and a guestbook display sign. The work was made to suit outdoor coastal conditions, quick setup and a neat finish for guests arriving on the day.

A community event on the harbour side

The client was a community event committee in Simon’s Town organising a public gathering close to the waterfront, where guests were coming in from the greater Cape Town area and nearby Southern Peninsula suburbs. They needed signage that felt friendly and local, but still tidy enough for a formal community function. The signs had to direct people from parking to the main venue, greet arrivals at the entrance, and guide guests to the guestbook table without cluttering the space.

The setting brought a few practical points to the table. Simon’s Town can be windy, with salt air coming off the water, so the signs needed sealed timber and clean edges that would not look rough after a day outdoors. The client also wanted pieces that could be reused for future community events, which meant we had to think beyond one off decoration and build something durable enough for storage and repeat use.

What the brief asked us to solve

The brief was simple to say and fairly exact to make. The event needed three sign types, each with a clear job and matching look. The welcome sign had to be photo friendly, the directional boards needed strong lettering, and the guestbook display sign had to sit on a table without blocking the space around it.

  • One large welcome sign for the main entrance
  • Directional boards for parking, registration and the guestbook table
  • A smaller guestbook display piece for the signing station
  • Matching wording and finish across all items
  • Suitable for indoor and sheltered outdoor use

They also wanted the lettering to be readable from a short distance, especially for older guests and anyone arriving late after dark. We kept the wording plain and direct, because event signage works best when people can understand it at a glance.

Materials and specs for the event set

We produced the set from laser-cut timber board with a smooth sealed finish, then paired the pieces with stand backs and mounting options suitable for event day setup. The welcome sign was made larger than the directional boards so it could anchor the entrance visually, while the smaller boards were cut to fit stands and table placement. We used layered lettering for depth on the main pieces, and engraved details where a flatter look made more sense.

Because the venue was close to the coast, we finished the signs with a moisture resistant seal and checked the edges carefully so they could handle cooler evening air and a bit of sea mist. The pieces were packed in a way that kept corners protected in transit, which matters when a sign is going from Somerset West out to Simon’s Town and then being set up by volunteers on the day.

Production in a two week window

The project ran over two weeks from final wording approval to dispatch. In week one, Marli worked through the layout with the client, making sure the wording, line breaks and spacing would hold up on the actual board sizes. Shailen then laser cut the components while Ruan handled sanding, assembly and finishing. Lesedi kept the client updated on progress and confirmed the delivery timing so setup could be planned properly.

Week two was about finishing and packing. Leah organised courier dispatch and made sure the signs were separated and labelled for easy unpacking at the venue. We also checked each sign under the light before packing, because even a small glue line or uneven edge shows up quickly on a photographed event piece.

  • Week 1: wording, layout and proof approval
  • Week 1: cutting and first round assembly
  • Week 2: sanding, sealing and final finish
  • Week 2: packing and courier dispatch

Directional boards that kept guests moving

The directional boards were the part that had to work hardest. Guests were arriving from different directions, some by car and some on foot, so the arrows and wording needed to be obvious without looking harsh. We chose a clean type style and enough contrast against the timber grain to make the directions readable in daylight and under evening lighting.

At a community event, signage is not just about appearance. It saves the organisers from answering the same question every five minutes, and it keeps the flow calm when people are arriving in waves. In this case the signs helped with parking, welcome reception and the guestbook table, which meant the committee could focus on hosting instead of pointing people around.

Simon's Town Church Fit-Day Results and What Changed on Site

The signs did exactly what they were meant to do. Guests were able to find the right areas quickly, the welcome piece gave the entrance a finished look, and the guestbook display sign helped that table stand out without taking over the space. The client said the set felt cohesive and easy to place, which is always a good sign when a small team is doing event setup under time pressure.

If we were making the same job again, we would approach it in much the same way, but we would add one extra spare directional piece for backup if the site layout changes on the morning. That kind of flexibility is useful at outdoor events, especially in coastal towns where wind, vehicle movement or a late room change can mean the plan shifts a bit. For a repeat order, we would also suggest storing the signs flat in a dry place between uses so the finish stays neat.

  • Clear wayfinding that reduced confusion for guests
  • A warm entrance piece that suited the event tone
  • Reusable signs for future community functions
  • Easy packing and setup for the event team

From Somerset West to Simon’s Town and beyond

Although this project went to Simon’s Town, the same approach works for events across the Western Cape, from Cape Town and Stellenbosch to Paarl, Hermanus, Gordon’s Bay and Strand. We handle custom event signs for one day functions, community programmes, weddings and business launches, with courier packing organised from our Somerset West base. If you need signs for a coastal venue, a town hall, a school fundraiser or a market, we can prepare pieces that are practical, legible and suited to the space.

For event work, the details matter: size, fixing method, weather exposure and how fast the setup team can place each sign. That is what keeps the day running smoothly. It also helps when the wording is checked early, because even a small change late in the week can affect the cut, the finish and the packing order, especially if the event is happening over a weekend.
