Care Instructions

Looking after laser-cut wood is simple when you keep it dry, clean and out of harsh sun. Follow these steps to keep your gift, sign or decor looking neat for longer.

Start With the Right Place to Hang or Stand It

Wood is a natural material, so where you place it matters. Keep indoor pieces away from direct sunlight, heaters, air-conditioners and steam from kitchens or bathrooms. Strong sun can fade the colour over time, while heat and moisture can cause warping or small cracks. In coastal areas like Somerset West, Strand and Hermanus, salt air and humidity can also affect the finish, so a dry indoor spot is best.

If you are using the item outdoors, choose a sheltered position under a roof, veranda or covered entrance. Even then, it should not sit in full rain or face constant afternoon sun. For shop signs and event pieces, check that mounting is firm and level so the wood does not bow under its own weight.

How to Clean Wooden Gifts and Signs

For routine cleaning, a soft dry cloth is usually enough. Dust builds up in cut-out details and layered sections, so wipe gently along the grain and use a small paint brush or makeup brush for tight spaces. If there is a light mark, use a slightly damp cloth, then dry the surface straight away. Do not leave water sitting on the wood.

  • Do not use harsh cleaners, bleach or abrasive pads.
  • Do not soak the item or run it under a tap.
  • Avoid glass cleaner on printed or painted areas.
  • If the piece has gold, white or dark painted details, test any cleaner on a small hidden area first.

For stubborn fingerprints on reception signs or gifts handled often, a gentle wipe with a barely damp microfibre cloth is normally enough. A quick clean once a week keeps it looking tidy especially in busy homes or retail spaces.

Care for Painted, Engraved and Layered Finishes

Different finishes need slightly different care. Engraved wood is easy to maintain because the cut lines hold less dust, but layered signs and painted lettering need a little extra attention. Do not scrub the edges as this can lift paint or soften fine details. If the item has a stained or sealed surface, treat it gently and avoid sharp objects that may scratch the coating.

For layered signage, lift and move the piece with two hands so the joints do not take strain. If a layer loosens, set the item aside and contact us through the enquiry form on our contact page before trying to glue it yourself. Some adhesives can stain the wood or leave a shine that is difficult to remove.

  • Dust first, then wipe only if needed.
  • Use light pressure on painted names or logos.
  • Keep pointed tools away from engraved detail.
  • Store off the floor to avoid knocks and damp.

Outdoor Signs Need Extra Protection

Outdoor wooden signs can work well for covered entrances, patios and trading stalls, but they need more care than indoor decor. If the piece is exposed to the elements, check it regularly for swelling, fading or lifting edges. Sea air, wind and sudden temperature changes can be hard on wood, especially around Cape Town and the coast.

If a sign starts to look dry, rough or grey, it may need a fresh seal or protective coat. Use only a product suitable for timber and follow the maker's instructions carefully. If you are not sure what finish was used, send us a message through the contact page with a photo and we can advise on the best next step. Do not apply random varnishes or oils, as they can change the colour or affect the engraving.

Packing Away Seasonal Decor and Event Pieces

Many of our clients use wooden pieces for weddings, special events, festive displays and seasonal promotions. When the event is over, store the item properly so it can be used again. Wrap it in soft paper, bubble wrap or clean cloth, then place it flat in a dry box. Avoid stacking heavy items on top of it, because pressure can bend or crack thinner parts.

  • Keep all screws, hooks or hanging parts in a labelled bag.
  • Store in a cool dry room, not a garage with damp floors.
  • Do not leave the piece in a vehicle for long periods.
  • For courier returns or repeat use, pack each item separately to prevent rubbing.

If you are using decor for a wedding in Stellenbosch or a corporate event in Cape Town, it helps to unpack it as close to setup time as possible. That reduces handling and keeps edges cleaner.

When a Piece Needs Repair or Re-Ordering

Small marks and slight wear are normal over time, but deep splits, loose layers or water damage usually need attention. Please do not sand, paint or re-cut the item yourself unless you are confident it will not change the shape or fit. A quick photo sent through the enquiry form helps us see whether the piece can be repaired, refreshed or replaced.

For business signage, ordering a spare is a smart choice if the sign is used daily or moved often. Bulk orders, prototype samples and matching sets can all be made to the same size and finish, so you have a backup when needed. That is often useful for shops in Somerset West, Paarl, Durbanville or farther afield where delivery time matters.

With the right care, your wooden gift or sign can stay neat and presentable for a long time, and a little maintenance goes a long way.

Questions we get asked

Can I hang my wooden sign outside?

Yes, if it is placed in a sheltered spot away from direct rain and strong sun. Outdoor use is best under a roof, awning or veranda. Check it regularly for weather wear.

How do I remove dust from small cut-out details?

Use a soft dry brush or a clean paint brush. Work gently so you do not catch the edges. A microfibre cloth can help with the flatter areas.

What should I do if my item gets wet?

Wipe it dry straight away with a soft cloth and let it air dry indoors. Do not use heat to speed it up. If the wood starts to warp or split, contact us through the enquiry form for advice.
