Layered Sign Making

Layered sign making adds depth to names, logos and wall pieces with cut wooden layers that stand out in homes, shops and event spaces. From one-off family names to bulk business signage, we make each sign to suit the space, the wall surface and how it will be used.

What layered signs are best for

Layered signs work well when a flat board is not enough and you want the lettering or artwork to sit proud of the background. The extra depth gives more presence on a feature wall, reception area, wedding welcome board or shop frontage, and it reads nicely from a distance too. We make signs for homes in Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Paarl, Hermanus and beyond, with courier packing for nationwide delivery.

They suit family names, children’s room decor, business logos, room labels, menu boards, directional signs and decorative pieces for events. We can keep the look simple with two or three layers, or build more detail into the logo and border work. For coastal homes near Strand or Gordons Bay, we also consider humidity and choose finishes that help the sign keep its shape.

What is included in a layered sign order

Each order is checked from the first concept through to final packing, so the finished sign is ready to hang or hand over. We do the design setup, cutting, sanding, assembly and finishing in-house at our Somerset West base. If you already have artwork for your sign, we can set up the file from that. If not, we can help shape the layout and size it to fit the wall or entrance where it will live.

  • Custom sizing from small name plaques to large wall pieces
  • Laser-cut front layers, back layers and mounting pieces
  • Wood selection suited to the look and budget
  • Plain, stained or painted finish options
  • Assembly and alignment of all layers
  • Protective packing for collection or courier delivery

We also handle bulk orders for business fit-outs, wedding venues and event suppliers, which helps keep the look consistent across multiple signs.

How the design and production process works

We keep the process practical and clear. First, we confirm the wording, size, shape, mounting surface and the style you want. Then we prepare a layout proof so you can check spacing, line weight and the balance between layers. Once approved, the machine cutting begins and each piece is checked before finishing. Marli handles design consultation, Shailen runs the laser cutting, and Ruan takes care of the finishing and final assembly.

  • Step 1: Send your wording, logo or reference idea through the enquiry form
  • Step 2: Confirm dimensions, finish and how the sign will be mounted
  • Step 3: Approve the layout proof before production starts
  • Step 4: We cut, sand, assemble and finish the sign
  • Step 5: Collection from Somerset West or courier packing for delivery

For signs that need to sit outdoors or in covered outdoor areas, we can advise on the best build-up and finish, since direct weather exposure needs more care than an indoor wall piece.

Turnaround times and pricing approach

Turnaround depends on size, complexity, quantity and whether the design is ready to go or needs some reworking. A simple layered name sign may be turned around faster than a detailed logo with multiple parts and colour matching. We always aim to give a realistic timeline up front so there are no surprises closer to collection or dispatch.

Pricing is based on material use, number of layers, cutting time, finishing time and the amount of design work needed. Larger signs or bulk sets naturally cost more, while repeat business orders can be quoted per set for easier planning. We do not use one flat price for every item because a 300 mm nursery name plaque and a 1200 mm shop sign are not the same job, and it would not make sense to price them that way.

For corporate clients, wedding planners and shops in Cape Town or the surrounding towns, we can quote on a sample first, then scale up once the layout and finish are confirmed.

Sizes, materials and finish options

Layered signs are usually made from wood sheets in different thicknesses so the top layer stands off the base and creates visible depth. Common sign sizes range from about 250 mm across for small name pieces up to 1200 mm or more for reception walls and shop interiors. Thickness depends on the look required, but many signs are built with layers around 3 mm to 6 mm, sometimes more when a stronger profile is needed. We can also add spacers to create a deeper shadow line.

  • Indoor decorative signs for homes, bedrooms and living areas
  • Shop name signs for counters, feature walls and entrances
  • Event signs for weddings, launches and private functions
  • Interior branding pieces for offices, studios and salons
  • Custom shapes such as circles, arches, rectangles and freeform outlines

Finishes may include raw wood, light sanding, painted faces, stained tones or mixed finishes where the background and top layer contrast. If the sign will sit near the coast, we usually recommend a finish plan that handles moisture a bit better than a bare indoor piece. minor adjustments can make a big difference there.

Care, mounting and maintenance intervals

Layered signs are low maintenance, but they still need a little care to keep looking neat. Indoor signs usually only need a light dusting every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on where they hang. In kitchens, salons or entrance areas where dust builds faster, a soft dry cloth every week is often enough. Avoid soaking the wood or using harsh cleaners, because that can affect the finish and the edges.

For mounted signs, we can advise on adhesive, screws, standoffs or hanging points depending on wall type and sign size. If the sign is moved often or used for events, keep it wrapped in clean paper or bubble wrap between uses. For business signs that stay in place year round, it is worth checking the mounting points every few months, especially in older buildings where walls may shift a little with time.

If a sign is used in a humid area or close to the coast, inspect it every 6 months for any lifting, warping or finish wear. That simple check helps catch problems early and keeps the layers aligned. Our team can also rework or refresh older signs if the wording stays the same but the finish needs attention.

Questions we get asked

Can you make layered signs from my logo?

Yes. We can work from a logo or artwork file and simplify or rebuild it into layers if needed, so it cuts cleanly and still reads properly from across the room.

Are layered signs suitable for shops and offices?

Yes. Layered signs work well for reception walls, branded feature pieces, directional signs and interior branding, especially where you want depth instead of a flat printed look.

Do you deliver layered signs outside the Western Cape?

Yes. We pack signs carefully for courier delivery nationwide, and can also arrange local delivery in Somerset West, Cape Town, Paarl, Hermanus and nearby areas.
